No Good

I say to the LORD, 'You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.'

What an incredible statement is found in Psalm 16:2 where David declares – "I say to the LORD, 'You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.'"

David first of all declares that the LORD (Yahweh) is his Lord. That the God of the Jews, the God of the Bible is his authority in his life. There is no higher authority that He. If he is asked to do something, there there comes a firm"Yes, I'll do it". If he is asked to clear out the places and people that snare him into temptation and sin, there comes an answer "Yes I'll clear them out". All of this because David's God is Lord.

Then he declares"I have no good apart from you". If I am honest I will have to confess that I struggle with this verse. I have many things in my life that are "good" that don't bear any relation to Christ. Of course, I would argue that I am blessed with these things because God is good and thereby I do not have any good apart from Him. But this is not what David is saying. He is saying that God is the only good thing in his life. I have to admit that I can't comprehend what condition of the heart is required to truthfully say this to Jesus!

Jesus, change my heart and the appetites of my heart.
